Christopher Owings, Arizona Diamondbacks to Speak The Just Say No Club is in for a treat again as Christopher Owings of the Arizona Diamonbacks organization comes to speak at the December 13th meeting. Christopher is the son of John and Sherri Owings, one of our K-4 teachers. He has two other "baseball playing brothers", Kyle, who plays for USC Upstate, and Conner, who recently signed to play baseball for Coastal Carolina.
Plan to attend if you are able and hear Christopher's story.

Magical Say No Show The Just Say No Club members were entertained at their first meeting on September 29 by Mr. Ron Conley, magician from Myrtle Beach. Mr. Conley's "say no" messages within the program will remain in the minds of these young students forever.
We were happy to have many parents at our meeting also.
 Baseball, Soccer, or Softball Anyone?
Team sports are great for students of all ages. If your child is playing softball, baseball, or another team sport, I hope you support them as they practice and play their games.
Good sportsmanship is such a valuable lesson learned in playing sports or when participating in any competitive activity or event. Parents are role models for their children and their children's friends as well as their teammates. Make sure you give the chiildren a good example to follow as you watch the games/events.
Practice time at home with a parent is so rewarding for the child. Try to find time in the afternoons to give the little one some quality practice time with you, the parent.
Jump Rope for Heart Was G-R-E-A-T!
Jump Rope for Heart 2010-2011 Was
G-R-E-A-T!
We raised $12,843 to fight heart disease and stroke.
Jump Rope for Heart was held on Friday, February 4, 2011 from 2:30-4:30 in the cafeteria. Second grade students jumped to raise money for The American Heart Association. Money collected from JRFH is used by the Association mainly for heart research and school and community education.
We all had so much fun during the 2-hour event. There were many parents, grandparents, and friends watching the students jump. Dr. Floyd, our superintendent dropped by and spent some time watching the students as they jumped also. We certainly appreciated him being there in support of Jump Rope for Heart at the Primary School.
Our top collectors were:
Catherine, with $1,969
Hannah Lo. with $901
Hannah Le. with $618
Jackson, with $610
Catherine was the winner of our top local prize, a 27" digital color TV given by Mr. Dariel Council of Council's Mattress and Furniture.
Both Hannahs and Jackson won a $50 savings bond from one of these local participating banks: First Citizens, Wachovia, and BB&T.
Our top-collecting class was Mrs. Long's class with $3,233.96! The students in this class raised the money will be treated to a frozen yogurt party at school during a recess period.
The top-collecting team, Team "B": Jahmad, Maggie, Catherine, Jackson, LaMya, and Avery received a pizza lunch at school compliments of Pizza Hut. Yeah! They collected $2,906.15.
By participating in JRFH, students learn the value of taking care of their own hearts through exercise and by following other good health habits. It also shows the students that at a very young age they can truly make a difference in other people’s lives.
This year's event was jumped in honor of Hannah and Cameron, two second grade participants who have heart conditions and are heart survivors. It was also in honor of Mark Oxner, a Leesville resident who received a new heart in January through a heart transplant. The event was also in memory of Mr. Larry Thomas who died of a heart attack in January. Mr. Thomas' wife teaches at our school.
Christopher Owings: Just Say No Club Speaker

|
Our Just say No Club members had a treat on December 8th. Christopher Owings, middle son of Sherri Owings, one of our K-4 teachers talked to the members and those in attendance about his life and his move straight from high school baseball to the professional level. Christopher was selected in the June 2009 Major League Baseball Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks after graduating from Gilbert High School.
He reminded our students to do what they know is right, to surround themselves with good, supportive and loving people, and to set high goals for themselves and to work hard to meet those goals.
Christopher brought some of his jerseys, championship rings, cleats, bats, newspaper clippings, and his seven baseball cards for the students to see. He also gave each student a signed bookmark with his picture as a Diamondback on it.
Christopher's baseball cards may be purchased on line. Just type in: Chris Owings Baseball Cards and links where they may be purchased will appear.
We all were very excited to have Christopher here to share his story with us and we wish him the best with his baseball career in the professional league.
Update on Christopher...
Over Christmas holidays, Christopher received a call and was invited to the Big League Camp for practice. He will report there in February. Congratulations, Christopher! We wish you the best.

Get Moving! Fitness Tips for Kids Here is the rule: get 1 hour or more of physical activity each day! The good news is that your kids’ 60 minutes of physical activity doesn’t need to happen all at once. Just help them get active for 10 or 15 minutes a few times a day.
You don’t need fancy equipment or a health club to help your kids get their daily physical activity. All you need are some regular household items and a little imagination. Combine a few of these tips, and they’ll quickly add up to a fun and healthy 60-minute routine. Naturally, the best way to get your kids moving is to get up and go with them. So make daily activity part of the program, and you could enjoy the health benefits too!
At-Home Gym
- Step to it: Take three trips up and down the stairs with your child, or do 20 step-ups on one step.
- Kangaroo Jump: Tape a shoelace to the floor in a straight line. Have your child stand on one side of the string with both feet together. Count to three, and cheer as he or she jumps over the string and back 10 times. Take a short break—and do it again!
- Crab Crawl: Sit with your feet flat on the floor, knees bent. Lean back and place your hands flat on the floor behind you. Lift your seat off the floor, putting your weight on your hands and feet. Now, crab crawl around the room with your kids!
- Can Do: Go to the kitchen and find two of the heaviest cans your child can hold. Have him stand with his feet flat on the floor, with the cans in his hands and arms at his side. Show him how to lift the cans up to his chest, bending his arms at the elbows. Have him hold for two seconds, and then slowly lower his arms. Repeat 10 times.
- Reach for the Sky: Grab a small textbook and hold it by the spine. Make an “L” with your arm—with your upper arm at shoulder level and your forearm pointing toward the ceiling. Now extend your arm straight over your shoulder, pushing the book toward the sky. Return to the bent-arm position. Repeat 10 times, and then switch arms. Have your kids follow along with their own books (and arms).
- Get On Down: Start with two bottles of laundry detergent (or any large bottle with a handle). Have your child stand with her feet flat on the floor, shoulder width apart. Place the bottles on each side of her feet. Watch as she bends her knees, grabs the bottles, and stands up. Repeat 10 times.
- Hoop it Yourself: A trashcan (or even a box) makes a great indoor basketball goal— perfect for a quick game of one-on-one.
Red Ribbon Week Faculty, staff, and students participated in Red Ribbon Week at BLPS October 24th to 28th. Each day was a "special day" in helping students to remember to make good choices and say no to drugs. Students signed their name on a large banner that read "I Say No To Drugs". They also had drug-free lessons in P.E. and Guidance during the week, they decoratd Bi-Lo paper bags to be given out utring the week, and brought food items for The Christian Ministry.
The following days were observed:
Monday- "Give Drugs the Boot"...Wear boots.
Tuesday- "Black Out Drugs"...Wear all of the black that you can. Also, wear sunglasses.
Wednesday- "National Wear Red Day"...Wear as much red as you can today to support a drug-free America.
Thursday- "Support our Military and a Drug-Free America"...Wear a camo shirt, an American flag shirt, or the color of your favorite branch of service.
Friday-"Team up Against Drugs"...Wear your favorite team jersey, t-shirt, or the colors of your favorite team.
Our Just Say No Club business sponsor, Kwik Karry treated all Just Say No members to a red drink on Friday. :)
Trike A Thon K-4 and K-5 students participated in a Trike A Thon in November to raise money for the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. They had a lot of fun riding on the "roads" in the gym with the guidance of their teachers and Mrs. Bouknight. The participating students who collected money raised $815.08 for the hospital in hopes that many of the children at the hospital will be able to ride a tricycle one day like they do now. The top collectors were: Jacob, Jada, and Patrick. Thanks to all students and parents who participated in the 2010-2011 BLPS Trike A Thon.
 Can You Tie Your Shoes?
Dear Parents,
Please make sure your child can tie shoes in a double knot. All students should be able to tie shoes for safety reasons. Untied shoes can cause children to trip and fall or cause someone else to fall. Some children may need a little more practice than others, but the skill can be learned. Students are so proud when they can tie their own shoes.
Many of our K-4 students can already tie their shoes Yeah!
Thank you parents who have taught your child to tie his/her shoes. :)
Just Say No Club
The Just Say No Club is for second grade students here at BLPS. It is all about making good choices and decisions. We thank our club sponsor, Kwik Karry of Batesburg with Mr. Al Asbill, Mr. Paul Gantt, and Ms. Sheila Wylie, owners. Check out the white trailer behind Kwik Karry. It reads..."Proud Sponsor of the BLPS Just Say No Club". Thanks, Mr. Asbill, Mr. Gantt, and Ms. Wylie.
The progams for this year have been scheduled and meeting dates, program titles, and presenters are listed on my web page calendar and is also included in the Just Say No Club folder in the right column of this page. Parents are always welcome to attend the meetings. Any person attending a meeting is asked to sign in in the office.
Again this year, the Just Say No Club and Kwik Karry will award 2 or 3 college scholarships to B-L High School seniors who meet the scholarship qualifications. Interested seniors must see Dr. Fellers at the high school for more information.
We were able to give 6 scholarships for the 2009-2010 school year; 4 from our club and 2 from Kwik Karry. WOW!
Schloarship recipients were: Kurt, Langley, Taylor, Katie, Richard, and Will. We wish them the best as they begin their college education.
WEAR TENNIS SHOES ON P.E. DAYS! Check the schedule to the right for your child's P.E. day.
Also, please make sure your child remembers to wear tennis shoes on their "P.E. Day". Thanks, Mrs. Bouknight
In PE class, students learn balance, body control. motor and manipulative skills, dances, and games. They are expected to show respect and practice good sportsmanship in class at all times. At the primary school level, we begin talking about the importance of leading physically active lifestyles. As their teacher, I encourage the students to participate in team and individual sports and other physically active endeavors. Family support and involvement in healthy living has a great bearing on choices the children make. Let's work together to build a healthier, happier future for our children.
